The concept of a capsule wardrobe is nothing new, however, the buzzword made a resurgence in recent times thanks to social media users on Instagram, Tik Tok and Facebook sharing hacks on how to achieve simple, and clutter free wardrobe.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

In theory, it is a composition of staple, high quality garments (that you love and look amazing in) intended to be mixed, matched and elevated by way of seasonal accessories. In essence, creating a seasonal wardrobe reduces “decision fatigue” and could increase your daily productivity rate.

Perks of having a #WFH capsule wardrobe…

  1. TIME SAVING

Curating a simple and effective capsule wardrobe will not only save you time in the morning by helping you to make one less taxing decision on the daily, it will also allow you to understand and build your signature style.

  1. SUSTAINABLE

The fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters in the world. Therefore, changing your mindset and purchasing habits will not only declutter your lifestyle, but also save the planet. Remember, when planning a capsule wardrobe, it’s always “quality over quantity”.

  1. ENCOURAGE CONTENTMENT & GRATITUDE

As with most things, the less you have the more you appreciate and value what you have. Excess dilutes contentment and feelings of gratitude. However, by committing to a capsule wardrobe allows you to feel content with and grateful for what you already have.

How to get started?

  1. PLANNING IS VITAL

When building a capsule wardrobe, it is important to make logical decisions of the items you want to include in the lineup. Always ensure that your selections consist of pieces that are both practical and versatile.

  1. MAKE SURE IT WORKS WITH YOUR LIFESTYLE

Lifestyle differs from one person to another. Therefore, it is crucial that you identify your usual day-to-day activities and design your capsule around your lifestyle.

E.g.: If you are #WFH, perhaps focus on outfits from the waist up.

  1. IDENTIFY YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE

Curating a capsule wardrobe forces you to get you to get out of your comfort zone! Don’t worry if you don’t get the concept the first-time round. It’s all about trial and error. Your signature style will become more apparent as you continue to experiment with different looks.

  1. SET A NUMBER OF ITEMS

In order to create a clutter-free capsule wardrobe. It is advisable to limit the number of clothing items between 35 to 40 items. However, work with a number that you feel comfortable to ease you into it.

  1. THINGS THAT ARE NOT ACCOUNTED FOR IN THE CAPSULE:
  • Shoes
  • Outerwear (jackets, gloves, hats, etc.)
  • Jewelry and accessories (necklaces, earrings, bracelets, scarves, etc.)
  • Workout clothes
  • Undergarments (underwear, bras, socks, and tanks/camisoles I only wear under other clothes, never on their own)
  • Swimwear
  • Formal wear (fancy dresses, skirts, business clothes, etc.)

If you haven’t tried a capsule wardrobe before, we hope this post will inspire you to give it a go!
